We write things every day, but who reads them? Posting on MangoLassi or an online forum or just talking to peers, the context of those we are talking to or that we perceive ourselves as talking to can have a profound influence on what we say, how we present it, and how we think about what we are trying to convey. Instead of speaking to the people that you know are reading what you write, consider thinking of your boss, CIO, CEO, or company owner or board being to whom you are speaking, or assume that they will at least be in the audience. Would you still be willing to say the same things? Would you still defend past decisions in the same way?

Thinking different about our audience can change how are brains allow us to process information. Consider changing your perceived audience context to improve your thinking around decision making.

This is definitely something that gets taken for granted. I rarely think of who is going to read what I write, but I do tend to be more conservative when posting. I think it's always best practice to at least be professional.

Some would argue that I must not think about this.

          But I seriously do.

That’s important, too. But it’s also about context

Those are great points, Scott. In my case I already know the boss reads my blog, but I completely understand the need to think about the audience (as in really step back and think about who might read the content). And in some cases, your boss may not want you sharing as much detail as you have in a post so as to not give too much away about the company's infrastructure.

This is one of my favorite SAM IT videos.

That too. Great that the boss does read it, but also important to remember that he is there when writing it πŸ™‚

I often get people asking if I'm thinking about who is reading it, and you can bet that I know that my boss, coworkers and clients are always reading.

I'm pretty sure we don't all πŸ™‚ I've read so many things where people outright claim that they refuse to do their jobs or are intentionally screwing their company that I'm pretty sure that they are banking 100% that their boss would never read the thread. I often invite people to have their owners or CEOs read threads that people disagree with me on and if their CEO agrees, that I'd digress. In all these years, I've never once been taken up on a management review.

I've even offered free consulting, that I'd come in and talk to management just because I was passionate about getting good advice out there.

                        Also, no takers.

This is the kind of thing I did in the last 12 months on purpose, in all the places where I knew my "boss" (partner with more stock) would read it.

Then I would be like "Hey you see that guy online who just shit crapped all over our company".
