When I installed Zoiper i got alot of random SIP Registration attempts from my IP to my PBX. It stopped when I uninstalled it, so I haven't touched it since.
That's not surprising, your cell phone can change IPs as you move around your city, join random WIFI, etc.

If they are from your IP, what's wrong with that?

All from my IP. It was from the desktop app, trying to register random extension against my PBX.

It didn't seem right having a bunch of registration attempts for extensions that didn't exist on my pbx to come from my ip.

For random extensions?

I agree it's likely they are related, but the hack could have been just using zoiper to do their bidding, once it was removed, it wouldn't try again.
Also, it appears that software like Zoiper are the targets of hackers these days.. compromise their servers and deploy infected versions (see CCleaner). I wonder if this happened to Zoiper?

Another reason that I like Linphone... open source and normally maintained by my distro.

Just realized today when routing a ticket that our VOIP is pbx based? No idea what any of this means, but excited to learn

Essentially all business VoIP uses a PBX. There can be exceptions, but it’s mostly theoretical.
