I have an issue with Excel 2016 and was wondering if anyone else has run across this yet. Basically, if I open the program and then close without saving, Excel closes fine. If I save either to the local disk or network and the go to close, in most cases the workbook closes but Excel does not. I can keep clicking on the X and it just won't close. ALT-F4 does not work either. I do not get a "Not Responding" or any other indication that there is a problem. The only way to close is to end task. It will sometimes freeze when I click Browse to open a file as well. Kind of feel like it is Windows Explorer related but I am not having issues in any other programs. MS Word does not have this issue so I'm not really sure what to think at this point.

      Any suggestions???

      Things I've tried:

      1. Quick Repair
      2. Full uninstall reinstall
      3. Disabled all addons and COMs
      4. Uninstalled Intel HD Graphics
      5. Updated MaxxWave Dell sound drivers - apparently there was an issue with OptiPlex 3040's and 3050's
      6. New user profile
      7. Excel Safemode
      8. Check DDE under options and then uncheck
      9. Disable Graphics Acceleration under options
      10. Disabled Antivirus
      11. Installed latest Windows Updates and Office Updates
      12. Rolled back updates to different builds of Office

Try running a chkdsk /r or Spinrite on the local drive.

It's possible there's a problem with the disk where the temp file is being written, and Excel is having a hard time cleaning it.

@syko24 another thing I have seen that could be related is if your disk is maxing out. I have seen some of our slow disks do this and cause weird issues

Another thought was if there was a Windows Update that messed something up.

Running chkdsk /r remotely. Waiting patiently for it to come back up holding breath.

Yeah still a no go. It's just weird because if I click the x nothing happens. I just get the circling curser. I can still click File and Close and the document closes fine but I can't exit out of Excel without an end task.

Kind of feel like I need to nuke and do a system reinstall. Just don't want to reinstall everything just to be right back where I'm at afterwards.

Have you already tried booting into safe mode too?

Yes, windows safe mode as well as excel safe mode.

sorry i wasn't clear. i meant disk reading/writing. if your disk is doing too much too fast then that can cause weird issues

So I believe I was able to resolve the issue. I ended up rolling back my Office updates using the method from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2770432/how-to-revert-to-an-earlier-version-of-office-2013-or-office-2016-clic . I had tried numerous versions but none seemed to work. I ended up trying Build 1707 16.0.8326.2073 and holy crap it worked.

Just another observation before I had rolled back is that Excel was using a high amount of CPU (about 45% to 50%). I have seen other people complain about CPU being high in some older versions but it was typically related to the Creators Update and not Office updates.

Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions!! I will let you guys know if this one blows up on me too.
