      Linux desktops have no shortage of options for text editing applications. As a platform known for doing lots of text editing, it tends to be used very often. My personal pick for my text editor of choice across all desktops, including Linux of all flavours, Mac OSX and Windows, is the open source Atom text editor. Atom isn't just built on the amazing Electron framework, but is the original project that created Electron. (Microsoft's Visual Studio Code is a sibling editor built from the Atom project's work.)

      Atom is fast, beautiful, has good file handling, integrates with GIT natively, has loads of extensions, is theme-able and does code highlighting for nearly any language. Atom is light and easy to use, but powerful enough to be almost anything you would ever need a text editor to be. It is not a development environment, but is generally my choice for development work.

      Availability:

      Atom comes in both RPM and DEB package formats, or visit the homepage to build your own.

      For non-Linux systems here is Atom for Mac OSX, and on Windows you can get it via repo with:

      choco install atom

        @scottalanmiller

        One of the best editors that I've worked with to date. And it has a dark theme, which is bonus points for me.

          The Git Plus plugin is one of the most productive things I've used.

            That's what I use, too.

              I usually have been using vi and nano for a while but that looks something cool.
