Well, my new DC that I created has given up the ghost. (This is a 2003 DC ... still have not moved off 2003 yet.) Very strange since it is brand new. I've never had a DC go on me (knock on wood).

The original DC is still up and running with no issues.

      My question is:
is it OK to install another DC from scratch (for redundancy) before dealing with removing the dead DC from AD?

Ugh, it appears the Dead one does.

You might be able to force the running DC to assume all the roles. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc816779(v=ws.10).aspx

Once you do this, you'll need to do a cleanup of the AD and remove the dead controller. Once all of that is done you can then bring up a new server and promote it to a DC.

Yeah I am seizing those roles right now.

So I guess the answer to my original question is basically, yes you need to do a cleanup before just installing another DC.

I've been lucky to never have to do this. Doesn't seem too terribly crazy.

So to add some info here...

                1. I seized all the roles held by the dead DC
                2. I cleared the metadata from AD
                3. I cleaned up the entry to the dead DC in DNS
                4. I deleted the dead DC from Sites and Services.

Is there anything else I need to do, or can I now install another DC?

Just make sure your backups are good.
Add a new DC, but since you seized the roles, you can not use that same name as old box.
Why are you still on an ancient os? Is there an app that depends on the domain/forest functional level?

Basically because I still haven't decided which way to go moving forward.

We're a smallish company (probably wouldn't even use AD if we were starting from scratch) so I've been weighing my options. Since everything still works perfectly for what we need, there hasn't really been the pressure.

I originally found ML looking for advice on buying a couple physical servers to install Server 2012 on. I have changed my thinking on many things since then. But the consensus was to wait for Server 2016.

At some point I am either going to...
                    a) just upgrade to 2016 and keep the current windows OS based system
                    b) move to some sort of Samba based solution
                    c) totally move to the cloud

Everything but one server is virtualized. I am waiting until I make a choice to move the data off that server.

If you are small enough, JumpCloud is completely free.

We are not that small, unfortunately.

Well then the answer should be obvious... you need to downsize.
