Instead of doing an upgrade, I decided to do a migration. I spun up a nextcloud instance next to my owncloud instance and migrated everything over.
I was able to migrate all my images and CSS edits easily. I only had to make a few minor tweaks as some of the formatting and colors are slightly different.
I am planning a upgrade for a number of client systems that are on ownCloud to get them to NextCloud.
But after seeing this post from @IRJ I am wondering which path should I look to go. I have the storage space available to do a new VM and copy data over at all the sites.
Looking for any opinions of people that have done either method.
@jospoortvliet Can you provide any thoughts? I wont hold you to anything. just wanting opinions.

This is what I did, I guess you could consider it an upgrade instead of a migration. I copied my owncloud directory to a new location before modifying any files.

You can use the upgrade tool which is even easier if you are on a current version of owncloud. Even though the article doesn't say anything about updating from owncloud, the first article I posted does say you can use this method on current owncloud servers. You just switch the update channel and search for updates.
