I this this as a double edged sword. If you're in a setup that's so small as to only need one or two - the then phone app is probably ample, but if you have more than a 2, then moving to a controller makes complete sense to me.

But I can see you point as well. You have an ER-X and a single AP, you want to just have an easy time managing them both from CLI.

Right. It's not a big deal, just something that would be nice to have. I only have 2 APs at home but I have an ERL and EdgeSwitch.

I could be the only one, but I like the EdgeOS interface a lot.

      the GUI or the CLI?

GUI, CLI is the same I think (Never used a USG, the cli on the APs is really limited and not the same).

yeah the EdgeOS GUI is OK. I don't have any issues with it, until I need something it can't do.

It has 900% more than the Unifi controller interface has.

What? You have no issues with it until you need something that it cannot do. Umm,wooden that normally be the case with anything

The point I was driving at - is why would someone like @stacksofplates even both considering he loves CLI normally to use the GUI when it can't do everything - that is all.

Things like traffic info, deep packet inspection, and other visualization stuff isn't available from the CLI.

If you have a USG - the spam inside the console sure makes you believe it does.

Ah ok. I'll stop pretending like I know what's going on with it. I only have APs so I never see the other parts of it. I'm just basing that off of the VLAN info and networking info from the controller parts I use. They looked really limited.

exactly - they really need to add more to the unifi controller interface - or whatever... that crazy issue where if you had a static IP and tried to use VPN it failed in a boot loop.. only through using a JSON file on the controller could you get around it, and even so it still wasn't fully the way you wanted it.

The unify controller does have a lot of information if you do everything unify

What additional features can be setup with just the AP? Anything cool/useful?

The USG does not give you any features at all it is just router. If you mean the unified controller I only use that I don't use just the Phone app so I do not know if the Phone app has limitations that the controller overcomes or if the phone can do everything the controller can do

The phone app is really limited, at least the last time I tried it. And I couldn't even use it because you needed a new AP with the QR code and I didn't have one at the time. I tried the Android app, but the new iOS app might be better. This was back when it first came out also so a lot may have changed.

They're just APs but the controller allows you to do things like assigned tagged VLANs on different SSIDs.

Another plus is you can upgrade them directly from the controller.

With the controller live in running you can do guest network with no access to the main network sign in portal all that kind of stuff. Not needed specifically usually in home office but for someone like you who would also use it for learning/testing that's very useful

This is what I meant by limited with the controller. This is pretty much all I can see with the controller and no USG. The new controller has a lot more, the VPN stuff never used to be in there.

This is the default settings that came with it. I've never even turned off the DHCP server because I'm not using that subnet.

Actually that doesn't matter. If you had a USG, DHCP would be provided on that network with those addresses, as it's the USG that acts as the DHCP server, not the controller software.

those settings are for the USG or a unify switch those have nothing to do with an AP directly

That is actually something I very much dislike about the unify controller now. I have no way to disable all of that crap if I'm only going to be running access points.
