@Bob-Beatty It is spelt correctly for English-speakers.

Spelt is a grain. The past-tense of spell is spelled.

Spelt is an alternate spelling for UK/Aussie English 🙂

@Addie Reputation should either go both directions OR keep "good" and "bad" karma counters. IMHO 🙂

It does currently go both directions.. there's a guy who has a -3 right now.

So reputation is what people think of our posts, not any scale of technical competency?

Yes, just like most sites, including the one most of us came from. At least points are for people voting on what you put, not just for having put it. Each vote gets you one point, instead of the post getting automatic ten points and people voting on it getting zero.

Doing technical competence is highly subjective at best and requires a LOT of effort to do correctly. Check out ServerFault for a feeling on how it can be done well. But they are a Q&A site, not a discussion site like us and the place many of us came from. Discussions have no good means of being ranked technically.

The reputation system here is "merit" based, not technical. As opposed to the system you are thinking of which is "activity" based primarily. Three different ways to approach it.

Not knocking it, just interested. I've only had a quick look through some of the threads and have seen a lot of 'points' based on funny answers and such. I'm interested to see how that plays out as the site grows.

Lots of people talking about how to potentially improve it. Although it is so simple now that it might be perfect. Very predictable which is important. Although a major question will eventually be.... should WC votes count, or only ones in the IT group(s)?

I personally feel IT ones should be the only ones to count. Otherwise the results are skewed.

That depends on what you want to get out of your points system. If it is intended to be an IT community it makes sense to keep the points where the real content is, the rest is just anncilary really.

@JustRob I agree. However, other places base it off contributions (kinda). You already have a post counter shown for you on each post. Would make more sense to use reputation to show competence. IMHO

Exactly, that's why I suggested keeping the points where the real content is, in the IT side of things. Toilet talk is just the extra fluff around it that helps build community and familiarity with other users.

Exactly. One shows how much into the community you are. The other shows how good you are for the community. Two different things that can both mean a lot if setup correctly.

Looking at the stats, I have the lowest ratio of reputation to post count. Am I doing that badly? 🙂
