I fucking wish we could get pricing like that in Canada.

Have a buddy buy it for you and hand ship it up.

border agent: That's a nice server you got there.... be a shame if you had to... pay taxes on it! muahahahaha

Nothing to claim, a buddy gave me this equipment from his personal lab.

"In general, the goods you include in your personal exemption must be for your personal or household use. These goods include souvenirs, gifts that you received from friends or relatives living outside Canada or prizes that you won."

Canada customs gives no fucks about gifts, only charging taxes on everything

      https://travel.gc.ca/returning/customs/what-you-can-bring-home-to-canada#conditions

And worst case, why not just have a receipt for $100 for computer equipment.

      What's the tax on that?

You seem to be under the impression that customs agents are dumb. You would be incorrect in my experience.

Tax rate here is 13.5% so potentially saving $500 in tax is not worth the risk. They can seriously mess with you.

      2630x1.25x1.135= $3731CDN.... sigh.

Edit: checked xe.com, it's $1.30:1 sobs quietly for the death of his online shopping fun times

YOu are assuming that the low price would be used. Those could easily be taxed based on a higher $5K or so US price.

For Ontario, Customs will charge me the HST (13%) of the Canadian value of the converted stated cost. So if the server is $2,500 USD, they will convert to CDN and then tag on 13% tax.

That's if customs even agree that it is worth what you paid. Nothing says they can't say it's worth way more than that in Canada (and they would indeed be correct)

Yup, that gets us. Cheap servers at the border turn into more money for taxes than for the servers!

The question I keep asking myself on this topic is why bother to declare anything? When you enter Canada (unless something has changed recently) they don't mandate a search of you car.

@MattSpeller are you Mexican looking, maybe that's why they also want to search your vehicle...

I need to pass a security background check for basically any IT job that's worth having. That would be a life f(***)ing event if they caught me.

And they certainly don't mandate a search of your car when coming back from Canada the last that I knew.

If there is nothing to declare, they can mind their own business.

But the search rate is REALLY high. Pay attention at the border, they search all the time.

I've been searched entering Canada with the only reason being that my luggage was a questionable colour.

                      2630x1.25x1.135= $3731CDN.... sigh.

The question I keep asking myself on this topic is why bother to declare anything? When you enter Canada (unless something has changed recently) they don't mandate a search of you car.

@MattSpeller are you Mexican looking, maybe that's why they also want to search your vehicle...

They don't MANDATE a search of your car. But if they do, that's jail time. Who risks jail to save their employer money?

Jail is a joke compared to losing your career.

Ha. At least in the US, it's illegal to fire someone for not breaking the law. If they try to do that, your job is protected.

Nah, I meant if you get caught doing something dumb like that even for yourself it's still most likely the end of your IT career.

                      OH okay. Ha ha.

When traveling though Canada because the route was faster, we got searched - so much for saving time, at least an hour at the stop. We just stayed in the US for the return trip.

It's something like 10% of cars get searched.

We were pulling an empty trailer. Of course they couldn't see inside the trailer, being enclosed. At least that part was fast.. but the luggage in the van, etc.. that still sucked.

well in our case it's 100%! We have a cottage in Ontario. Last few times we went up we got selected for the "random" search which of course takes 2 hours and we are extremely late getting there. So we have NOT gone up there with the kids because I do not want to go through that with a 3 and a 1 year old.

I wonder how much tourism is lost because of that BS.

I'm sure a ton of it is.

I refuse to go to or through Canada if I'd be forced to take the 407 ETR, freaking highway robery rates for traveling on it, if you don't have Ontario plates.

Any downside to getting an R620 in lieu of the R720?

I have a large soft spot for R620's - they seem to be real solid troopers. Keep em clean, they go forever.

Not that I've had issues with the 720's, just a long history with the 620s.

A bit more power usage (which could be huge over a server lifetime.) That's about it.

Wouldn't the R720 use more power than the R620?
