Is this a good idea? Or should I transfer roles to another 2012 DC? The site where the 2008 server resides has a faster connection.

Transfer to another 2012 R2 server, there is no benefit in downgrading.

Or better yet, get a 2012 R2 license with upgrade rights and upgrade to 2016 when it releases (obviously you need to do something in the short term though)

So you are on a 2008 R2 domain? Yes, transferring the roles is fine if that is the case.

Not a downgrade if the 2008 R2 is a DC already.

Or, if you are really on 2008 R2, consider this a blessing, and get a Linux VM spun up ASAP and move to Linux for your AD. If you haven't been keeping your Windows up to date, you probably don't have the money to be on Windows. Fix two birds with one stone. Kill birds? I messed that up. Anyway, you get what I mean.
