It looks like the issues are similar on the Fire TV, it doesn't offer the ability to modify the DNS settings.

That last link suggested a DNS service that might do the trick if you can modify your router's DNS settings..

Are you using the Edge Router X?

Although this article suggests that you can edit the DNS settings in the Fire TV:

Oh, Unlocator actually has Amazon Fire TV instructions as well as Chromecast... looks like that might be a good option.

Looking at Unlocator.... looks easy and cheap but it appears to not support Netflix which is a pretty big one. It does list Amazon Video on Demand which is pretty nice. The kids use that a lot. Hulu is there too. Hulu and Amazon VOD are two of our three big things that we want to be able to use.

Netflix isn't so bad now that they have started offering in Europe and many other countries. When we were traveling earlier this year Netflix wasn't in Europe yet. But they got that straightened out over the summer too.

We are thinking about traveling with one but it would be ideal to not have to or at least to have the option to not have to. Using a Ubiquiti router with network level VPN is the fallback plan in a pinch, but services like Hola let us get content from all over the world, not just from one place that the network to network VPN terminates in.

@scottalanmiller I was more thinking about redirecting traffic to 8.8.8.8 to another IP 😉

Gotcha, that might work too. In some cases (very few) we will have router access even without bringing our own. One of the toughest things is trying to figure these things out before we arrive in a place. If we knew what it was going to be like there it would be pretty easy. But often we find up and have to figure out what to do once we are there.

Grab one of these. That is what I use for network level VPN.

Are you having issues because of locality (videos only play based on your location)? If you have a server/PC at home running, would ZeroTier be a viable solution for this?

Nevermind. Re-read your original post. I clearly didn't pay attention.
