The OpenOffice project has been floundering for years since its core team and marketing all left to go to the LibreOffice fork project. LibreOffice has since taken nearly all development and mindshare away from OpenOffice. Most people probably forgot about OpenOffice at this point. There have long been serious concerns that OpenOffice was doing nothing more, at this point, than bleeding a small amount of attention and development away from the far more important LibreOffice project.

At this point, there are a number of rumours surfacing that the OO project might be heading for a full stop. Is it time for OO to just go away and let LibreOffice carry on with the sole stewardship of the ecosystem?

I think that it is a very good thing. OO has been hurting LO, just a little bit, for a long time. It's not good for the code, for the end users or the ecosystem to have both. OO has been offering nothing of value for a very long time, just slowing LO adoption down.

OpenOffice was the first platform that I recall using as "Open". It quickly went downwards as other projects kicked off, name LO.

I used OO many, many years before it even had that name. It was StarOffice when NTG was first deploying it!

It was a German closed source company back in the mid-1980s. It's a very, very old product. Sun open sourced it when they purchased it and renamed it to OpenOffice after the switch in code licensing. I suspect that it has been primarily LibreOffice longer now than it was OpenOffice!
