So in another conversation it was brought up that I should benchmark the IOPS of a potential build that I'm refining as solutions change.

Which isn't a bad idea at all, but my question is how would you benchmark a system that is CLI only, as well as you don't even have yet?

Benchmark calculators often seem flaky at best. So what do you use to figure out the potential of the server you're looking at?

I used hdparm in the past but there is also this tool. http://freecode.com/projects/fio/

Which benchmark specifically are you concerned about?

IOPS and CPU performance would be items I'd be looking at.

Ideally something like Dell's benchmarking would be awesome.

But I'm unsure if anything exist like this that is readily accessible.

You are looking at Dell servers, why not use Dell's DPACK? It's the industry standard.

Well; not that I'm not looking at Dell DPACK, but its not readily accessible.

And I'd like to benchmark what I have now to compare and contrast, which aren't dell servers.

You just ask Dell for it. It's not a public download, but it is not at all hard to get.

Just be prepared for sales calls and an IPoD proposal when you send the info into Dell. They do have a ton of good info when they send you the data back though.

Or go through a partner and then none of that happens 🙂

Wouldn't a partner charge for the analysis? I know don't get advice from a sales person but does that apply to just the data as well?

This is my question - I know that Dell has created DPack to gain sales, but since they allow resellers to provide the service direct, hopefully skipping sales calls from Dell directly - what prevents someone from sharing the software and skipping the whole process? I'm guessing it's that the logged information has to go through some automated process that Dell has created along with DPACK to create the reports.

Or go through a partner and then none of that happens 🙂

Wouldn't a partner charge for the analysis? I know don't get advice from a sales person but does that apply to just the data as well?

We do, but it is pretty minor. You pay for like one hour of consulting to "read" the report.

Could one of these... partners... send us a link to download DPACK? 😉

wink wink nudge nudge know what I mean?

                                            Dell sends it out.
