Now that windows 10 is accepting Windows 7 Keys to activate what does that mean for imaging rights? Do we still have to have them do inplace upgrades to get windows 10 and then image or can we image activate with the windows 7 Pro OEM key and then change it to the Pro MAK?

@Jason From what I read from Microsoft, it appears you do have to do the inplace upgrades, then you can image.

Yeah, that's what we had our technicians doing but they changed Windows 10 Licensing in the late November release to not require in place upgrades to actually licence an OEM install.

Can you test it and tell us?

This would be a huge time saver!

And right after I got all of my KMS woo's fixed 🙂

Which version of the install media were you thinking of using?

Well, I need to build a new image any way - so how should this be done?

If I use Open License media, as soon as the machine comes onto my network it will register with my KMS server. This is no good as the underlying hardware won't be on file with MS as upgraded.

I do have another network I can use to get to the internet. I guess I'll install using the Open License media and see if I can put ... no I don't have a Windows 8.1 key because 8.1 came pre-installed and there's no stickers anymore.

I personally consider it to much to ask to try to pull that out of the BIOS before upgrading on a massive scale.

                  So now what?

If you already have a KMS server, why worry with extracting the BIOS keys?

That's only for the Volume not for the base license. if you are just using imaging rights.

Because legally you still need to upgrade the OEM license on a machine before you can install your Open License version of Windows 10 on the machine.

While you can physically skip this step, legally you can't.

I would have had this done but our Hyper-V lab/WDS stuff is messing up.

I'm still considering options of what media to use? Can a KMS key be used with the generally available ISOs?

Not sure why that would be the case? But assuming that's right, and our goal is to install Windows 10 only once, we'd what?

Deploy an image of an Open License media based install, once in the OS, change the key to the Windows 8.1 key, activate with MS (hopefully), then change the key again this time to KMS keys and activate against our KMS server?

That's kinda what we are looking at trying.. There's nothing from MS that forbids that way.

The reason that isn't legal is imaging rights require the use of both Volume Keys and Volume Media.

While I'm sure that's the idea (and it's likely that KMS keys won't work with OEM'ish media) I don't recall reading anything specific about the use of Open License/Volume media.

I think it will work.. It's not a technical limitation but a licensing one. Imaging rights strickly require Volume Keys and MEDIA.

                                            OK just tried it.

Windows 10 Volume License media with a Windows 8.1 OEM key (pulled from the BIOS).

The error: You are running Windows 10 Pro. The product key you entered cannot be used to activate this edition.
                                            Error Code:0x004f210

Looks like we are still stuck upgrading like normal first.
