@Dashrender Nope, looks like a browser redirect - did it actually drop a payload?

Yeah it did. The window is larger than the screen... I suppose it could be a popup... But it would be the of this type I've seen.

I offline scanned the system with defender offline and it found nothing. I slaved the up to another computer running Webroot and the scan is 30% done so far finding 73 bad files.

That looks exactly like a web popup to me.

But is it actually just a virus or is it just "bad" cookies and internet temporary files?

My girl has been having the same issue a few separate times. Each time Malwarebytes finds it and removed it.

She just keeps going to the same damn sites. It also makes a change to Internet Explorer Proxy settings.

It's simple enough to remove, and isn't "new" IMO.

                But eh

Call the number and see if Indian guy answers, that wants to remotely fix the issue. At that point you should know the drill, you could play along for some fun and record the session.

The site is h8si and has google.com listed as part of the non-URL portion of the address. That's definitely just a bad web page.

Well that's dramatic, tossing an SSD for a new one... 😛

                        I'll take the old one. . . .

eh? I didn't toss a SSD. The laptop was/is 7 years old. I asked if they felt the computer was still performing fast enough for them? They said yes, more or less. I told her I wouldn't replace the laptop then until it failed. Then later on in further conversations we were talking about SSDs and how they are massively faster than HDDs and she said, Hey I wanna do that! So I did.
