Same thing would apply if a person did a bad Linux update and broke a farm of servers. Also I see multiple issues with companies not wanting to update their systems and keeping old systems running which is a far worse thing.

It does, but I think you are in London so compare to Manhattan and it's still high, but not crazy high.

However, in Manhattan we'd never be able to get someone full time for $30K. That shows how different the numbers are. NYC and London are similar in a lot of ways, but your employment costs are half ours, while your hourly on calls are higher.

I like your possible idea above about maybe a split remote access/onsite FTE for lower salary. Costs would be lower and provide a higher value to both the SMB and the employee.

Split removes nearly all of the benefits like the taxes, real estate, locality, etc. It's not a bad thing, but it means that you cripple the remote benefits significantly in most cases. Instead of saving X, you save .1X or something like that.

Typically the benefits are already split, the employee spends less to go to work, the company gets more productivity and spends less for them to get the same pay. You don't have to reduce pay to see a wide range of financial and soft benefits to both parties.

Yes, many every day. Yes, many really exists. The one that made me think of this today wrote back and gave me the info them updated their info about me in their system. They apparently have my location recorded from 2007 and were using that as a bad assumption. But that's really problematic because their system records "where I am" and nothing about "where I will consider work."

So start working on being a System Administrator and secure all the systems as needed. Focus on securing each OS and then go next to application security with each OS, you might also need to touch the network so knowledge of it would be a plus.

The non-B&S scenarios seem unreasonable...

The position was open at the start of the interview, but closed during the interview and they felt bad so considered him for a lower position: but didn't mention that this happened and were going to ignore such a huge thing having happened. Physically possible, but completely unreasonable to assume. They did the interview for the L2, but the non-technical person decided to change the tech level without talking to a tech person. Also not reasonable, and possibly still B&S even if this is what happened.

Is there a scenario where someone applies for too senior of a position and could legitimately get offered something more junior? Yes, but it would be discussed, it would be open and honest, and it would happen at a technical level not a recruiter screening. It's insanely unlikely in the real world, but could happen. But it would never happen like this, where it was done by an unqualified person, silently with no one discussing it until called on for it.
