I'm glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I hope they understand and let you reschedule.

Very true. I'd bet there are places where 50k is comfy as hell, but it would not be enough to buy a 800sqft condo here unless you've been saving for years or have extremely good discipline (and cheap hobbies!).

Here in Spain you could buy a home and live decent. In Texas you could buy a small home and live very frugally. In Upstate NY you can do okay, too.

There are definitely places where it is comfy. And definitely places where it is starvation.

@scottalanmiller You just don't have flash installed.

Who the hell still makes new sites with flash? There's almost nothing that can be done in flash now that can't be done in JS+HTML5 with less effort.

This company also said there will likely be a video game session after the follow up interview. Hopefully performance in said game doesn't affect the job as I suck at most video games.

Where is this company and how can I apply 🙂

Headquarters in in Virginia. but they have offices all over the US (no IT staff in those though). I'd be working for the parent company that owns a few large construction companies, road crews, agricultural and a few other odds and ends over the US. There's about 20 people at HQ that do IT, HR/PR, Accounting/Payroll for all the other companies. There's about 3,000 employees total I think not including sub contractors.

Oh wow. Sounds nice, hope you get it!

I've only ever basically told an employer they could go **** themselves once, and it was a very small company here in Syracuse. The owner was lying to his clients and was a completely incompetent idiot, so has he's insulting me as I'm just packing up my stuff, I called him out on it. It was quite enjoyable...

Can you stream you Vudu movies, if you have any?

Vudu still exists? I figured requiring someone to download their own client like its 1998 destroyed that company like 5 years ago.

What are you going on about?

Vudu doesn't require downloading anything. My Bluray player has it built in and I'm pretty sure Roku does as well (probably all the major devices).

They also have a feature where you can download the movies for offline viewing.

Oh, that's my fault, I was thinking of Veoh, though I think now even they have some sort of flash based option and/or a remote control device. I do remember for a while it was this weird pseudo-RealPlayer joke of a technology I couldn't imagine why anyone would want it.

    Say what? I have 20 years experience - you're saying I should have a 20 page resume?

In theory, yes. You should have so much experience, skills, etc. that it would take 20 pages to hold it at the same rate than an eight year professional would include stuff. Once you reach a certain point, like us, you start culling. When my resume hit 12 pages I started trimming it. I no longer put meaningless stuff like college / university work or my certifications on my resume. That trimmed three pages right there (over 150 certifications, six colleges.) I took out nearly all of my jobs and left only highlights (more than 40 short term positions removed and trimmed many pages summarizing it in just a couple lines.)

I shorted job descriptions to tighten them up. I'm below eight pages now and it is very tight. I've worked on it a lot. But you should, once you reach a senior status, be stuck dropping stuff that people at a lower level would hungrily list on their resume. I only list a tiny fraction of the major tech that I know, operating systems that I'm qualified on, etc.

I've been looking at the LFCS and LFCE certs, although I'm not sure how much weight they have on the resume. http://training.linuxfoundation.org/certification

Not much. Never heard of anyone caring at all.

None of them I know started as an Linux Intern... Just an intern at the company then became really good at Linux and was given a full time job.

Then yes, I'd agree with that being the most common path that I see.

As Americans, the costs of certification tests are quite low. We don't really think of it as an onerous cost. But to much of the world, any cert test represents a significant investment, especially to people just entering the field. In the US we are used to "grab any cert you can pass", which mostly makes sense. Skip a few nights out, have a few fewer drinks and you've paid for an exam. Doesn't work that way for a lot of people, it's a major investment and picking the wrong cert could be a devastating loss of income.

    Ok, fair enough.

That's awesome that there is more variety and ability to focus more. I agree, DC would be the best in general, Cloud probably the second most general. Network and Desktop seem far more focused and likely to be used in less general career options.

Thanks! My boss and his boss are both in that video, too. My seat, when I am there, is right under those clocks that they show.
