In the midsts of the "scandal" at Reddit, Ellen Pao has stepped down as CEO.

I feel bad that she got so much hate, no one deserves that.

Victoria was awesome and added something good to the community. I hope to see her return if the issue was with Pao.

I don't really use Reddit so no strong feelings. Seems like Ellen really got treated roughly over something people did not have good visibility into. But it sounds like her row with Victoria was handled pretty foolishly too.

I've never liked Reddit, so I don't keep up with it. What's the scandal?

Apparently she fired a moderator who was really popular. I'm not familiar with any of the parties involved so it wasn't very clear to me. I think that it was the moderator for the AMA content.

Of course Ellen got a nice parachute and is staying on as an adviser. So this did not impact her all that much. And there is speculation that she was only brought in as a temporary CEO so that she could make the tough decisions and choices and let the board fire her if things went badly so that she could be made a scape goat. There is a good chance that the Redditers will have very short memories and forget all about this soon and Reddit have gotten away with what they wanted. Nice bit of corporate theatrics.

Some of what I read on the subject of the firing of the AMA lady revolved around her refusing to commercialize some things that were being pushed down from the top.

I suspect that Victoria, I think that her name was, was not entirely innocent here. I'm sure that it is not that cut and dry.

These things always get mangled by the media. Ellen, in this case, looks like the pure bad guy and Victoria as the pure good guy. Probably a lot more complicated.

Yes, there was more than a single instance of refusing to do things mandated by management regarding the AMA gal it was not a once off thing.

Reddit's former CEO has some insight into the situation and basically wants to let everyone know that their campaigning without understanding the situation just screwed themselves over...

@mlnews Better still, it all looks to be a sham (hiring Pao)

I'm thoroughly disappointed in the whole thing and future direction.

I need to make my own reddit, with liquor and ..... bender quotes!

We could run a Reddit competitor off of the NodeBB platform 🙂

The biggest issue here is democratization. One of the downfalls of any democratic system is that the people making the noise and demanding action are the ones that don't have the inside information, don't know what really happened and have no means of knowing if they are voting for or against what they actually want. Democratization here led the people to stop thinking at the goal level and get caught up in a detail that they didn't understand and so wanted to vote for one thing and instead ended up voting against themselves because they didn't maintain goal level thinking.

Same as how the poor voted for the bank regulations that quite obviously would only hurt... the poor. They didn't demand that banks work better for the poor (goal level) they tried to decide how best to do that which backfired and they voted, nay demanded, that banks be regulated in such a way as to force the profits away from the poor to the rich. It was insane. Yet, here we are. (Where poor = people who earn under $250K.)

@scottalanmiller blaming the users of Reddit (while very tempting and occasionally deserved) for this lack of clear communication from the community's leaders makes zero sense
