That was my response. How many people does this limit it down to? seems like a small pool.

      Yeah.

They have two or three things that take you down to the 1% range (Chef, Unicorn, etc.)

Then they have one that takes you to the 0.01% range (OS dev.)

Then they have one that takes you to the 0.001% range (never touched Windows.)

And most of these things overlap. If you have tons of experience to qualify you for most of that, like me, you almost always also have other experience, like Windows. It's possible that the person they seek literally doesn't exist!!

It's almost like they tried combining a dev ops role into a Linux Admin then just did it badly and throw some extra things to limit it.. for no reason.

We will only hire professional delivery boys with 20+ years of pizza delivery experience.

Only those that own five or more cars but have never owned a Ford and can fix them using spare parts found in a convenience store.

And no one that has ever held a valid drivers license.

Not gonna lie, this made me laugh more than it should have...

I think what they mean is no Windows admins lacking Linux experience, but it's just badly written.

I don't know. It seems like they actually wanted someone without any Windows experience. Maybe they view it as a corrupting agent?

Hmmmm.... so we are then assuming that these are pretentious, illiterate IT managers? Nothing like being unable to express yourself while being pretentious about how great you need people who work with you to be.

A taint. That's the strong impression that I got. They worded it very clearly. Not like in an odd way that could go either way. Seemed very intentional.

They said you could have windows experience very only on in your career but, they are looking for an admin who is a Linux specialist who only touches Linux servers and has been for years. He said they are looking for a highly skilled specialist they do not want any generalists as in there experience they are sub par employees.

In my experience, this would be a sub-par employer.

Agreed. I understand they want someone who specializes in Linux, but to say that if they have Windows experience, that it disqualifies them? If they didn't have the adequate Linux experience, then that's fine. But simply having other experience disqualifying them is asinine. That's like a dealership saying "we want someone who knows how to fix Fords but if you've worked on Toyotas, you can't work here". I honestly can't think of a time when simply having experience is bad. If you learned something incorrectly or don't have the right type of experience, that's fine, but that's a separate issue. I'm pretty sure that @scottalanmiller could do any Linux job out there, but under this description, he wouldn't qualify for the job. Sounds like he's basically looking for either Linus Torvalds or Richard Stallman for the job. Not just someone with Linux experience, but a total Linux fanatic. An extremist. That's a dangerous thing to have, much less ask for!

Actually, I get what they were aiming for with this. But, like the rest of the qualifications, it does not match up with the job title.

Contributing to an open source project generally means you are a developer, not a sysadmin. Also contributing to an open source project certain does not imply that the project is a linux based project.

Yes. It appears that they want a DevOps person that is 90% Dev and 10% Linux Ops. On top of the fanatic piece that they clearly want.

                                  and like 5% network admin.

It seems to be getting common to limit people based on what they have done just as much as have not. I've seen a few Systems administrator positions. And they will say things like SQL Server administration (If you have administered SQL Lite/SQL Express, do not apply).

Not going to mention them. It's a large financial company. They redid it a bit now since I complained but still it's bad.
