I was asked to install ESXi on a server today. I get in and it's a Dell Poweredge 2800. Now I have to find a link to download version 3.5 and see if it even supports vm replication

You went the wrong way again.

Your response to seeing the hardware should be no.

I do not have the luxury of doing that as I've said

      Yes, you do.

What crazy IT manager is making these decisions? Who trusts you to run the environment but not to protect them from obvious blunders?

He's a good person that made a poor choice which is more than I can say for any of the other people I've worked for. I'd take a kind person with not a lot of knowledge over a terrible person with not a lot of knowledge any day of the week. There is so much I don't know, how I can turn around and judge these people? I think cultivating learning is the right direction to go in instead of judgment. Maybe I can have a positive impact on the employees here before I find new employment.

How is it "made" a poor choice? It's "continues to make poor choices when confronted with his ineptitude." What makes him a good person if he continues to make a bad decision even after knowing it is bad?

"Made a bad decision" = wanted me to put ESXi on this useless box and changed his mind
"Making a bad decision" = wantING me to STILL put it on now

It's not something that he's done that is in question, it's the decisions being made right this second and that keep being made.

Your job doesn't define who you are as a person for one, but he clearly doesn't know that these decisions are bad.

So you'd hire me with my current level of knowledge? Let me guess, shoe shiner?

You switched back again. We are NOT talking about him having MADE a bad decision, that just is a mistake. It is NOW that you've informed him that this is an epic mistake, a mistake that is very serious and so wrong that the discussion should not even have to happen.... and he NOW CONTINUOUSLY makes the make of not course correcting.

Do you understand? It's not him not knowing what he was doing in the past. It's knowing now and not caring. How do you call him a good person if you KNOW that he KNOWS what he's doing is bad and he does it anyway? Is he a "nice guy" screwing the city?

If this statement is true, then you are NOT required to install ESX on that old box. Which is it?

I was asked to install ESXi on a server today. I get in and it's a Dell Poweredge 2800. Now I have to find a link to download version 3.5 and see if it even supports vm replication

You went the wrong way again.

Your response to seeing the hardware should be no.

I do not have the luxury of doing that as I've said

Your job doesn't define who you are as a person for one, but he clearly doesn't know that these decisions are bad.

Who said that it did? I'm talking about hubris, not a job. And you are saying that you are knowing doing insane work and keeping critical failures from him?

You know me better than that. He does attempt to fix the issues he causes, but that doesn't stop him from making new bad decisions.

Example: He used AVG PC Tuneup on the domain controllers and then uninstalled it once we "resolved" the problem, which I'm not even sure it is resolved yet. We will see. explorer crashed yesterday and reported the same errors as before. He's not continuously making the same mistakes, he's just making a lot of mistakes. It's different.

If this statement is true, then you are NOT required to install ESX on that old box. Which is it?

I'm not installing ESX anymore. I told him yesterday I am going in a different direction which I think is a much better plan and he said okay. I'm not talking about one specific scenario, I'm talking about everything across the board. I can't handhold my boss.
