I know that you need to have a business class router (access point, switch, etc.) for a business, but having problems articulating why.

I have a client who has an NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000 and I am trying to recommend going to Ubiquity gear.

What are some good talking points that I can use to educate them as far as WHY business class is a must?

@ccwtech sounds like a mom and pop shop? don't bother.

Just walk away and tell them to fail without you.

They can either act on my recommendations, or hire someone else. I will not work with any client that does not accept my recommendations.

I won't tell someone buy only this thing. I always give options. but if they don't want my advice, pay their bill and I walk away. I do not want to deal with them.

Because businesses use business equipment, not toys. And they don't waste time discussing it, as 30 minutes of talking about it costs more than the equipment in question. This is a 10 second conversation - a real business can't waste time trying to buy junk when enterprise gear is the same price, there is no way to recoup the cost of the decision process.

                  1. Cost savings up front.
                  2. Security.
                  3. Manageability.
                  4. Visibility.
                  5. Low term cost savings.
                  6. Not looking like a right fool to anyone, IT or otherwise, who sees what gear they run.
                  7. Prestige.
                  8. Professionalism.
                  9. Because the people they pay for advice said so.
                  10. Because they didn't come up with a compelling counter argument.

The cost of one ubiquiti router is faster and more secure than any home use router. It's also cheaper. If you wanted to pony up and pay for a crappy router for gaming you can pony up and pay for a proper router. I mean that's the whole point of UBNT. Low cost, enterprise grade equipment. Personally since they are tiny, I'd get the USG since performance isn't an issue and neither was their routing lol.

Only issue I've seen is the same thing you'll see on any router/firwall. Turn on all the features and line rate drops. If it drops below what your line can handle it gets annoying.

I just severely dislike the USG in general. The EdgeOS line are great as long as you understand their specs and limitations. The USG is just an ERL with UniFi firmware.

Right, but it's just 10 people. The minute something becomes advanced I'd move to an ER-4 or ER-6.

But even if not advanced, why the USG?

I think what they should do is nix the Unfi line and merge it and allow you to choose colors 🙂 but then other people wouldn't like that. Unifi is pretty cheap and works fine. USG I know has been the scorn for a lot of folks, but it does work for the most part 🙂

No, it's not cheap and doesn't work fine. It's double the cost and extra effort. Exactly bad for the exact group it's "in theory" supposed to be good for. It doesn't "work fine" because being cost effective is a key part of that definition. It costs too much.

Instead of coming up with why it is "not so bad", why is it "good" in any way? What's the driving factor pushing you to double the cost versus the EdgeRouter line?
