Start by looking at your local fire codes. Do they even allow wireless controlled sprinkler systems?

Just put it on a guest network, I support. IoT isn't a concern as a category, it all comes down to the specific device. And, of course, my general recommendation is that IoT is only scary when you have other exposures from LAN based security. If you have things locked down and not dependent on the LAN for security, IoT is of no concern. That doesn't mean that walling it off in a VLAN isn't a good idea, but it should be icing, not the security cake. Same with any device that doesn't require LAN resources.

...or get a regular, non WiFi enabled sprinkler controller and deploy it with far less effort and probably far better results and longevity.

Yeah, I am referring to the gardening type, not fire suppression.

It's weird but I thought this was for fire suppression as well.

I was assuming fire suppression sprinkler systems. . . not the yard variety of sprinkler systems. . .

My thoughts exactly. The main reason he wants it is because it is on the edge of the property, across the parking lot. I don't even know if they are designed to be used outdoors or if they are only for garage/indoor use.

@wrx7m Can your wifi reach that far? If not, then back to the conventional controller you go.

Sorry for not being clear. Generally, you would assume it was more business in nature. Sadly, I get these types of requests more often than I should.

So, who is this "guy" who insists on deciding on new network attached items? C-level? Your boss? Manager of any kind? Or just some loudmouth who read some marketing material or saw a commercial on HGTV? How lazy does one have to be to not be able to make it to the edge of this property? Is this parking lot the size of the Mojave desert or something?

Reduce your power on your AP's.

                                Problem solved.

That complicates things. Write up an estimate to expand the wifi and all the network config it will take to get it running, then show them the dollar amount. They might change their minds. If not, you work for imbeciles.

Just because he can pick up the signal does not mean that he can communicate with the signal. Communication is a 2-way street.
